Garden Design
Stagg Design Landscape Architecture offer expertise in designing gardens of all scales; large developments, private gardens, rural properties, public gardens and small apartment courtyards, just to name a few. Whether it be an entertaining area, children’s playscape, water wise garden, low maintenance and/or low cost garden, or something else all together; we’ll work with you to develop a space fit for your needs, and the needs of your local environment too. With close assessment of the environmental conditions of your site (microclimate, soil, water availability, elements and exposure etc.), we’ll advise what the options are, and how to get the most out of your landscape.
Ecological Design
Across the globe, there is an ever growing demand for taking a well considered ecological approach to the design of landscapes and the places we live. This basically means the use of a design approach that minimises environmentally destructive impacts by integrating with living processes. Ecological design might currently be on-trend, but it is something Stagg DLA have always been dedicated to; observing, exploring and furthering our understanding of ecological systems, so as to be able to work with them. This sounds complex, but there are some basic principals that can be applied to any design to improve its ecological impact.
This is where we start to get really excited, as using our passion and understanding of the Australian environment, we can advise how to make a site work with the local environment, and get the most out of the landscape for people, plants and animals alike. Wether it be your home garden, a wetland, buffer planting, streetscape design, wildlife corridor, or something else all together, there is always a way to positively impact and support the local environment.
Planning Permit Landscape Plans
Local governments require a Landscape Plan, as part of the permit conditions, for most new developments. This is to ensure our landscapes and the places we live are improved; both now and into the future. With a good knowledge of the Victorian Planning System, and experience with local council requirements; Stagg DLA can design, draft and submit Landscape Plans for all types of new developments. Wether it be the design of the street frontage for a small subdivided unit development, to a large urban developments, through to a buffer planting for a large agricultural or industrial property. We can work with you to develop a Landscape Plan to get the most out of your landscape while also meeting government requirements.
Site Visit & Landscape Tips
If your budget won’t cater for a full professional design to be procured, or you’re keen to DIY design, or just want to give your existing garden a revamp, we can come to you and give you some tips. We can have a walk and chat, and can give you some ideas on how to get the most out of your landscape. Whether you want a habitat or bird attracting garden, a water-wise garden, or something else; we can give you pointers on what will suit your site, to set you on the right path to success in your garden.
Plant Lists, Plant Procurement, Plant Set-out & Planting
Following on from our ‘Site Visit & Landscape Tips’ service, we can assist you further by compiling a plant list, with suggested plant species and plant numbers, best suited to the site and the desired outcome for your landscape. Based on your list of suggested plants, we also offer a plant procurement service, where we liaise and visit a number of nurseries in your region, so purchase the best plants on your behalf, and deliver them to you. Upon delivery, we can offer a plant set-out service; to place your new plants in the best locations, at the right spacing, ready for your DIY planting. Alternatively, Stagg DLA can help with your planting and soft landscaping. With a dedicated and hard working team to call upon, we can plant and mulch all your plants for you. To ensure plant survival, we can also come back to water on a regular basis. Regular watering will help with establishment, especially through hot and dry periods.
Informative Articles, Talks & Workshops
Stagg Design Landscape Architecture strives to go beyond your typical design service, branching out to connect with the community. We share expertise and knowledge in understanding biodiversity in designed landscapes, and assists with designing landscapes to connect our community to the local natural environment. We have developed ways to support and enhance our natural world, hand-in-hand with our community. We’re dedicated to understanding how we can fit into our environment. We’re always fascinated by our unique and amazing natural systems, and enjoy the natural beauty our country has to offer. By giving locally specific articles, presentations and workshops on how to create habitat gardens, water-wise gardens, indigenous gardens, sustainable gardens etc., it makes it possible for many more people to create great spaces in more places. Every bit counts, and every bit helps.
Community groups, school groups, tertiary education groups, gardening clubs, corporate groups, consulting firms, leadership groups, environment and Landcare groups are just some of the groups we share our expertise with, so they can then spread this knowledge throughout their communities. One of our passions is connecting young people to nature, so we’re always up-to-date with our working with children’s checks, to enable us to get young people back to nature any time we have the opportunity.
Design Styles
Stagg Design Landscape Architecture offer three main styles of planting design; Indigenous Design, Native Design, and Standard Design. Each has their own unique attributes, benefits and place in our landscape.
Indigenous Design
For the Indigenous Design style, we use plants indigenous to your region. This means we exclusively use plants that are native to your region, and don’t use plants native to other regions of Australia, or plants from other parts of the world. An indigenous design, crafted with the right expertise, can be the most sustainable choice, in every sense; environmentally, ecologically, financially, longevity and water-wise etc. Indigenous plants have evolved to suit local conditions, therefore survive well and have the added benefit of offering habitat to local wildlife. Who doesn’t enjoy having landscapes alive with our Australian birds and wildlife after all?
Native Design
For the Native Design style, we only use Australian native plants. This means we only use plants native to any region of Australia, but we don’t use exotic plants. A Native Design creates a unique and striking landscape, as Australia has some of the most amazing and unique plants in the world. Using native plants gives a landscape a uniquely Australian sensibility, whether it be in a small garden or broad-scale landscape.
Mixed Design
For the Mixed Design style, we can use a mix of plants of any kind, both native and non-native plants. We can select a range of plants for you and provide expert advice to ensure your design doesn’t include plant species which are declared weeds, or which have the potential to become weedy. Many plant species which were commonly used in our gardens in the past have become problematic environmental weeds. By choosing Stagg DLA, you can opt for the use of non-native plants in your design, and guided by our expert advice, rest assured that you won’t end up with problematic weeds amongst the plant selections.
